In seventeenth-century Amsterdam, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives at the grand canal house of her new husband, wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt. Behind its beautiful façade, however, she finds a household filled with secrets and a marriage very different from the life she imagined.


When Johannes gives Nella an extraordinary wedding gift, a cabinet-sized replica of their own home, she commissions a mysterious miniaturist to furnish it. Soon, exquisitely crafted objects begin arriving at the house, each reflecting the people and rooms around her with uncanny precision, and revealing details the miniaturist should have no way of knowing.
